Where to buy art supplies

Published on 25 October 2025 at 14:16

Being in a small country like New Zealand, there are limited places to buy high-quality art supplies, especially local ones; most are online and take ages to get to us. This is something that I thought I would see what is out there and what other artists within New Zealand go to.

I put out a thread post to see what the responses would be

There are a few different places that are great for buying good and great art supplies, and there are some places that are great for cheap supplies, especially if you want to try new things before using the more expensive items.

The cheap places that people go to are:

  • The $2.50+ Store
  • Toms Emporium
  • Look Sharp

These places are great, especially if you are on a budget or want to try new techniques.

This is also great as there are also more places around to get them, so that it is easier access.

The middle range is:

  • Spotlight
  • OfficeMax
  • Warehouse Stationary
  • Mitre 10
  • Bunnings
  • Resene Paints

These are more of the middle-range places to get to. Spotlight has a range of craft items, not just paints so this is great as it means you're able to make more, with better quality paints or art supplies than the cheap stores.

OfficeMax and Warehouse Stationery are great to get good-quality paints and drawing supplies.

Mitre 10, Bunnings and Resene paints are awesome places to go as you can get various types of paints and you can add test pot paints to this and can create unique pieces of art.

The more high-quality art supplies that are great are:

  • Gordon Harris
  • The Drawing Room
  • The French Art Shop
  • Takapuna Art Supplies

All of these are highly recommended as they stock a wide range of brands and are all high quality, and are great to use as they have great pigments and great mediums for all types of artists.

These are the ones that are the best for most, however, they can be more expensive hence why there is cheaper options.
