As an aspiring artist, balancing time in the studio along with a full-time job and a husband, and cat, It is important to find time and make sure that I organise my time correctly in the studio.
Being Realistic
Being realistic about what I’m planning to do when entering my studio or starting any painting. This means being aware of how long certain tasks takes and not underestimating the amount of time they take, for example if a painting takes four hours don’t push it into a two-hour time.
Keeping my studio clean and organised.
I tend to reorganise my studio every two weeks to help keep it clean and put things back into place, I also keep my studio clean as it is in my lounge, so if is messy it makes the lounge look untidy.
I use different storage products to help keep things organised and easy to get to, for example, I have a metal drawer, that I keep my drawing and resin supplies in, and I have a tool box to keep my tools in, when not in use.
Also making sure that I clean up after myself after I finish painting or drawing makes it easier when I go back to do more, as I can find things easier and not have to do that before I start painting or drawing, meaning I could lose focus and the motivation to create new art.
Block Schedule your Time, I use Google Calendar and Time Tree app to help plan my time and when certain things are happening, so I don’t over plan or overschedule myself, I use time tree with my husband so we can see our work schedules and what things we are doing so we can sort out time together, and I use Google calendar to plan things for my art alongside time tree. I also use it to keep track of my bills so that I pay them on time as well.
I also use them to block out time to work on painting or work on the admin side of my art as well, and my also plan around my day job as well.
Make time to paint/draw each day
Taking time to draw or paint each day even if it is doodling, it helps keep your hands steady and helps to keep the creative part of your brain going. It also helps with planning bigger pieces and ideas come to mind
Have a dedicated space
Having a dedicated space to create art in, will help create space to get the creative juices going. My studio is in a corner of my lounge and gives me space and an area that I can just be able to work and not have my work be disturbed while drying.
Having a specific area for creating art means that you can also go in and it will help you become focused on what you want or just to get ideas out or on paper.
Do one thing at a time and Eliminate distractions
Making sure you only do one thing at a time means that you can put your focus and attention on the piece you are working on, so that mistakes are not made or you do something in a piece that you are not proud off,
Making sure you do focus on one thing at a time also means eliminating distractions including keeping off my cell phone and making sure that any other distractions are minimised. Also having time blocked off, to focus on a certain task helps as well.
This also means not taking on too many tasks or jobs at one time as it spreads your attention thin and you will be able to finish tasks on time and before their deadlines when required.
Experiment and learn new things and embrace failure
One thing every artist should do is to experiment with different techniques and mediums, and to learn things as this helps to increase creativity and create new and unique pieces and improve each artwork.
Also, with trying and learning new things you need to embrace failure as it means that you are learning and know what can and what work for you and means that you can try things again as you can learn what went wrong each time you fail.
Failure is a learning opportunity to gain perspective and new thoughts on each thing and techniques.
As an artist, we should all embrace failure, and don’t let perfect be the enemy of improvement or great work,
The made thing is to have fun and don’t lose faith with your art.
