For a while, I struggled to find a way to sign my work that doesn't ruin the painting or take up much space.
The first option I had was to use a wax seal, but I found this was too large for certain paintings and distracted from the painting itself. This is now being used for my COA (Certificates of Authenticity) as an added extra piece to add to.
The second option was my thumbprint, but it had similar issues with the wax seal, including size, and did not always turn out great, as you can see in the photo.
The option I ended up going with and works well with all pieces, and can be adjusted based on the size of the painting and does not take away from the artwork itself, is signing my initials with a glass dip pen and pen ink.
I find that using my initials works well and looks good with all my work.
The reasons I sign my work and why you should sign your work is:
- It adds authenticity to your work
- Adds value to your work
- Is a part of artistic tradition
- Can act as a timestamp of your work
- Claims the work as a piece I have created
- Creates a finishing touch to your work
- It is enjoyable to add to my work
- Can be used as a watermark
- Protects the artist
There are many more reasons you should sign your work; these are just a few reasons that you should, especially for people who paint or draw.
